Efficient surface selction

NX CAM QuickTip | Surface selction with bounding edges in Siemens NX

NX QuickTip - bounding edges

In Siemens NX, there are numerous tricks to make surface selection more efficient when machining workpieces. In this NX Tutorial we take a look at the Edge Bounding Function – a feature that is particularly helpful when you need to select many surfaces precisely.

In this QuickTip, Heinrich Flaum shows how to select surfaces using the Bounding Edges

Edge Bounded Region

For machining, the Variable Axis Guiding Curves operation is suitable. Instead of leaving the selection method on faces, we change it this time to Edge Bounded Region. Two steps are now necessary: first, we choose a Seed Face – ideally, the lowest face in the desired area – and then define the Bounding Edge. A helpful tip here is to set the selection option to Tangent Edges so that only the top bounding edge needs to be selected manually.

Traverse Interior Edges

Then, we click on Preview to see that almost all surfaces between the Seed Face and the Bounding Edge are automatically selected. To ensure that the remaining areas are also included, we activate Traverse Interior Edges under the Region Options. The preview now shows that all desired surfaces are selected.
The final calculation of the tool paths confirms that all selected surfaces are machined correctly.

With the Bounding Edge function in Siemens NX CAM, you not only save valuable time but also ensure a precise and secure selection of many surfaces – an indispensable tool for any CAM user.
