Rotary Roughing in NX CAM

NX CAM QuickTip | Manufacturing Parts with a Turn Mill Operation

Rotary Roughing

This NX CAM QuickTip is about the "Rotary Roughing" function, which has been available in Siemens NX since the NX Release 1980. Using three examples, we will show you how to use this new roughing operation for rotary parts.

About Rotary Roughing

Rotary Roughing in Siemens NX is a function for manufacturing workpieces with a turn-mill operation. With just a few user-defined settings (workpiece and blank geometry), NX automatically determines the optimal manufacturing strategy for the rotating part. Using a Ball, Bull-nose or flat end mill it cuts in cylindrical levels. The tool axis is perpendicular to the cut level, producing 4X motions.

In our QuickTip, we show you how to work with rotary roughing on three different workpieces.

Extruder screw

Our first example is the machining of an extruder screw, for which Rotary Roughing is perfectly suited. We want to rough the screw geometry with an end mill.

We select "mill_rotary" as the type in our "Create Operation" menu and then "Rotary Roughing" as the operation type.

In the menu for this operation we can now make various other settings. For example, we select "Axially" as the limit machining range under Geometry and then define the start and end distances.

Eccentric Cutting

With Rotary Roughing we can also manufacture eccentrics. After selecting the operation and the operation type, we change the rotation axis as well as the cutting pattern and activate "Use 3D" under Geometry. In addition, we activate "Top off critical depths" under "Main". You can see exactly which settings we make in our video above.

Manufacturing on a milling machine

We can use Rotary Roughing not only on a lathe, but also on a milling machine. We now need to make sure in the operation settings that we specify the axis of rotation. We make a few more settings (Limit machine range Axially, cutting pattern as well as the definition of the feeds) and then start the machine simulation.

As we have seen, the Rotary Roughing operation in Siemens NX gives us a variety of ways to create roughing operations for rotating parts quickly and efficiently.
