3-axis deburring in NX CAM

NX CAM QuickTip | How to deburr complex geometries with a spherical mill

3-axis deburring in NX CAM

Deburring complex parts in NX CAM is easier as you might think. In this tutorial, we'll show you how to deburr a cross-hole in 3-axis using a spherical mill.

Since the NX 1980 release, there is a multi-axis deburring feature that makes it easier to deburr a workpiece edge in 3 axis using full radius and ball tools.

In our example, we have a workpiece with two holes crossing each other. We want to deburr the intersection in the center with a spherical mill, or lollipop mill.

For this case, we use the operation subtype added in NX: "Multi Axis Deburring". This can be found under the type "mill_contour".

For our workpiece we use this operation, select the spherical mill and confirm with OK.

We remove the checkmark from "Automatic edges", as NX would otherwise recognize every edge from the Z-axis. Since we want to define ourselves, which edge should be deburred, we deactivate this and click on the button behind "specify edges".

We select our edge to be deburred and confirm with OK.
Now we can define the deburring width, click on "Generate" and get our toolpath.

The operation type "Multi-Axis Deburring" is, as the name suggests, not only suitable for deburring our hole from above, but we can also use it to deburr the side hole.

To do this, we copy the already created operation and open the dialog again with a double click. The defined workpiece edge remains unchanged, but we change the tool axis. Under "Axis & Avoidance" we use the possibility to specify the axis by a vector. To do this, we use a function to determine the vector by specifying the direction. We click on "Generate" and get our toolpath.

In this QuickTip, we defined the edge independently. However, NX also automatically detects the edges of parts with any complexity and creates multi-axis operations to machine the specified chamfer size.

You have an older NX version where the function "multi axis deburring" is not available?

This Quick Tip explains how you can deburr a cross-hole with a Lollipop mil in this case.

With the "Multi-axis deburring" function, you can easily deburr even complex workpiece edges with a full radius and a spherical mill.
